Sometimes we feel we are in control of everything and everything seems perfect.
You seem to be satisfied with life and all of a sudden, there is a Surprise,a Test-either you lose your job or death in the family or an unhappy marriage or some health or financial problem.
You start thinking-all bad things are happening to me.
Why me ?
I pray Salah, fast, give Zakat, read Quran and you remember your good deeds.
Now Shaitan starts playing his trick. You might end up being despaired or arrogant.
Some start disobeying Allah and go to the pirs and babas or commit shirk by going to graves or go to those who have contact with Jinns.
Some even go to the extent and say,”I don’t believe there is a God. If God existed, why would he take away my husband/wife,or make me poor and ill ?”
“Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods, lives and the fruits (of your toil) but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. Those who, when misfortune strikes them, say: ‘Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him is our return. Those are the ones upon whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord and it is those who are rightly guided.” [Sûrah al-Baqarah:155]
The pains, the calamities that come are all exams, they are a means to test your faith and trust in Allah..they are a means-Allah wants to Forgive your sins.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“No fatigue, illness, anxiety, sorrow, harm or sadness afflicts any Muslim, even to the extent of a thorn pricking him, without Allah wiping out his sins by it.”
[Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]
So when calamities strike, when Allah tests you..do not despair,do not be depressed and grieve to the extent that you forget the purpose of creation, that you begin to disobey and reject your Creator.
Calamity is a lesson in Tawheed, faith and trust in Allah.
Know that you are a human and weak and you have no strength and no power except with your Lord.Allah is All-Mighty,All-Wise and in control of everything.
Ibn al-Qayyim said:
Were it not that Allah treats His slaves with the remedy of trials and calamities, they would transgress and overstep the mark. When Allah wills good for His slaves, He gives him the medicine of calamities and trials according to his situation, so as to cure him from all fatal illnesses and diseases, until He purifies and cleanses him, and then makes him qualified for the most honourable position in this world, which is that of being a true slave ofAllāh(‘uboodiyyah), and for the greatest reward in the Hereafter, which is that of seeing Him and being close to Him.
[Zaad al-Ma’aad, 4/195]
The tests, the calamities are a reminder that this world is temporary and what is with Allah is Ever lasting i.e.the Akhirah.
So what should we do when calamities strike ?
*Qaddar-allaahu wa maa shaa’a fa‛al.
Say,“Allah has decreed and what He wills, He does.”
*Innaa lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji‛oon, allaahumma ajurnee fee museebatee, wakhluf lee khayran minhaa.
“To Allah we belong and unto Him is our return. O Allah, recompense me for my affliction and replace it for me with something better.”
